This Fourth of July Weekend

You know that I always strive to be an emissary of light, inspiration, and knowledge. I believe strongly in the creative power of words, and focusing on what we want, not what we don’t want.

But I’m also grounded in the fact that there are times when we must address serious situations with serious words in order to overcome. We don’t dwell on the negative. We confront it with courage and right action to claim our victory. Now is one of those times. And the time for RIGHT ACTION is paramount and crucial. I cannot be silent…

As of yesterday, 40 of the 50 states in the U.S. are experiencing alarming increases in the corona cases, many reporting the largest one-week and one-day counts since the pandemic began.

The follow announcement from our Los Angeles County Supervisor mirrors what is happening throughout the U.S. (and perhaps in other countries). She clearly expresses what “right action” is indicated for this Fourth of July holiday weekend in the U.S.

Although this is addressing Los Angeles, IT REALLY SPEAKS TO THE ENTIRE NATION…

From Supervisor Sheila Kuehl:

It’s patriotic to care about others and I care about you. That’s why I’m sending you more important news about COVID-19 in LA County.

This week, the County Department of Public Health reported growing and alarming trends of community spread of COVID-19. On Monday, the County reported a one-day count of 2,903 new cases, the largest one-day count since the pandemic began.

We will be living with the major disruption of shutdowns and quarantines for much longer than we would like. The next 2-3 weeks will be critical to bringing the pandemic back under control, not overwhelming our hospital system, and ensuring that we can provide medical care to those who need it.

Wearing a mask, practicing physical distancing, and avoiding large gatherings, even with family, are small sacrifices that can make a huge difference, but only if we all do it. Big gatherings are a significant source of the community spread of COVID-19, so this holiday weekend, please be mindful of the way you celebrate.

To prevent crowding that can result in more people becoming infected, all LA County beaches, piers, beach parking lots, and bike paths are closed through Monday, July 6 at 5:00 AM.

This Fourth of July, do the patriotic thing for your family, your community, and for all of Los Angeles: Stay home, and if you really really have to go out, practice social distancing, and wear a face cover.

Stay safe!

Sheila Kuehl
