The Universe - by Reservation :-)
I wanted to take a ride
to pick something up at a store last night and my car felt like driving
into Westwood (I generally let my car have its way). Westwood is a
neighboring community but once I leave my quiet residential area, about
a mile or so away, the traffic can get pretty busy, even mid-week. Then
when you get to the Village, with the shops, eateries, movie theatres
and college population (UCLA) it's one of the few places in Los Angeles
which not only has a lot of vehicle traffic, but also a lot of people
really walking on the streets at night.
So, on the way there I thought I would test out my own advice about
creating "divine timing" in traffic (the previous thread). From here to
Westwood Village there are a several major intersections and many
smaller ones and that means numerous traffic signals, many of which are
three or four-way lights which can mean some noticeable down time. I
was in no hurry but I thought it would be fun to put my theory -
rather, my belief - to the test again and see if I could beat the
system.
Well, it was pretty amazing. From the time I left home I didn't hit
one red light, except at the extremely busy intersection of Wilshire
and Westwood Boulevards, where we stopped - but instead of the usual
long wait, the light changed in seconds. And it was especially fun to
see the red lights ahead on several streets change to green as soon as
my car neared the intersections. And even with all the cars in the
village, there were none blocking my turns - it was all so smooth.
Well, I decided not to stop in Westwood after all and turned around
to head back toward home. I took a left turn on a slower street but my
car again decided to have it's own way and turned back onto the main
boulevard. And there as I looked up I saw it...I couldn't miss it...
A full size billboard facing directly toward me with huge letters:
"The Universe - by reservation"
It would be an understatement to say I was surprised - and delighted at the same time.
The Universe - by reservation. I had to turn my head and get a
glimpse of who owned those words. I noted the website url and knew what
it was.
When I got home, I went to http://www.griffithobservatory.com. It has been a long time since I'd been to Griffith Park, where our observatory is located.
I clicked on "Public Programs" and what did I find?
The Samuel Oschin Planetarium theatre, considered the finest
planetarium in the world. And the opening show "Centered in the
Universe" takes visitors on a cosmic journey of exploration and
discovery (http://www.lacity.org/rap/observatory/psoplanet.html).
Is it that unusual to have a show relating to the Universe at a planetarium? No, it doesn't seem unusual.
But what are the chances that I would pass that billboard in
Westwood at the opposite end of a large city to find the Universe
staring me in the face with supersize letters?
I have been so engrossed in an inner cosmic journey of exploration
and discovery of the Universe, that perhaps I am being reminded of the
magnitude of the Universe in the outer.
The inner Universe and the outer Universe. It's all the same. We
are all connected to and a part of something incredible, aren't we? We
are all stars in this vast Universe. Some of us just have to be taught
how to shine.
